Skincare Layering

Let us start with a chart I made to show you the general way of layering.

  • Toner

  • Eye Serum/Cream

  • Face Serum

  • Moisturizer

  • Face Oil

  • Sunscreen (day time only)

Like I've mentioned in my "Skin Type?" blog, most people are layering their skincare incorrectly! This is rarely the consumers fault and most times due to lack of education from the producer and retailers end. I cannot stress how important it is to reach out to a skincare professional to see if you are using your products correctly.

WHAT ARE THESE PRODUCTS ANYWAY?!

  • Toner

Toners are used to quickly balance the PH levels in your skin after washing it. They usually contain high amount of water or hydrosol, vitamins, glycerin, or ingredients to treat a specific skin concern. Astringents have a similar job to toners only astringents contain high amounts of alcohol therefore are more drying. Astringents aren't used as much as toners there days, they are marketed more for oily/acneic skin.

  • Eye Serum/Cream

Eye serums(water-based) are lighter in consistency and texture and an eye cream(oil-based) is thicker. Every undereye product is different and contain ingredients to target specific concerns.

  • Face Serum

Water-based and light in consistency, not meant to hydrate the skin but to treat it. Every serum is is different to address specific skin concerns. They are meant to act as a magnet for your moisturizer. Face serums are not oils! Try Blissoma's Aura Face Serum that is loaded with antioxidants for a super free-radical protection and full spectrum gentle repairing properties.

  • Moisturizer

Can be water-based(oil in water) or oil-based(water in oil). Moisturizers are meant to hydrate the skin and also act as a sealant to help prevent water from escaping your skin. Again, every moisturizer will have different ingredients and oil/water ratio to target specific skin types and concerns. No matter the formula, you definitely want your skin to feel bouncy and well moisturized.

  • Face Oil

I love face oils! Please do not use cooking oils as a part of your skincare routine; the extraction and filtration process is not the same for cosmetic use. Not every oil is made the same, the molecular size varies which may make some more suitable for body than face. Face oils contain high amounts of fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins that repair damage, soften the skin cells and protect against free-radicals.

  • Sunscreen

Suncreen is the most "anti-aging" product on the market. Not only does sunscreen reduce the risk of skin cancer by protecting against UVB rays, it also keeps your skin healthier from the physically harming UVA rays (aging rays). Sunscreens come in balm sticks, creams, lotions, powders, face mists, and body sprays! So there is no excuse. If you are using a cream/lotion sunscreen on top of your skincare, I recommend you press the product on to the skin and gently massage avoiding excessive rubbing to prevent product from balling up.

Water Always Comes First!

If you are using a toner and/or serum before your moisturizer, please read the ingredients! Unfortunately there are way too many brands out there that sell oils as toners and serums. To keep things safe and simple, your toner and serums should have water as the first ingredient and if it does contain oil, that should be towards the end of the ingredient list.

Never Apply Oils Without Toner/Serum/Moisturizer

Applying oils directly onto the face, without applying a water-based toner and/or serum underneath, significantly reduces its effectiveness. This is why many times if you do this, you can still feel a tightness to your skin. Plant-based oils and butters are amazing for protecting and softening the skin which is why a layer underneath is essential.

Wrong Layering

If you've followed my steps and find that your moisturizer is balling up when applying, then your serum or toner might contain high amount of oils, and your moisturizer a high amount of water.

LASTLY...

Remember that it isn't necessary to use every single one of these products in order to have healthy skin, but if you do enjoy the benefits of layering, a thin layer of each will do the trick!
